Sisters in Peru celebrated the opening of Hogar Belén
with a special Mass and blessing. The long-awaited shelter
welcomes women who are seeking safe haven from physical
or emotional violence.
Sr. Teresa Benites Montero, who is responsible for the administration and coordination
of Hogar Belén, says, “We thank God for allowing us to start this new ministry.”
The English translation of Hogar Belén is Bethlehem Home. True to its namesake,
Hogar Belén brings hope and promise to women and children who are victims of violence.
Sisters Hogar Belén houses up to ten women and four children on a monthly basis, providing
food, spiritual support and psychological, social and legal help. The sisters partner with

There is a high rate of violence against women in Peru and few shelters where women
