CONGRATULATION AND COMPLIMENT
Expression of Congratulations
Congratulation is something that you say when you congratulate someone because of their
achievement or special day.
Congratulation is an expression that we use to give the congratulation utterance when he/she
succeeds in doing something.
Congratulations words express one’s praise for an achievement or good wishes on a special
occasion.
We use congratulations expression when something good happens to someone. We
congratulate him or her to express our pleasure.
The following are expressions of congratulations someone and the responses.
Congratulating Responding
I’d be the first to congratulate you on … It’s very good of you to say so.
I’d like to congratulate you on … How nice of you to say so.
Please accept my warmest congratulations. Thank you very much for saying so.
May I congratulate you on … I’m glad you think so.
I must congratulate you. Oh It’s nothing special actually.
It was great to hear about … Oh, I have a lot to learn yet.
Congratulations! Oh, not really.

Well done! / Fantastic! Oh, thanks.
Congratulating someone can be done by directly telling him/ her, by card, letter, or e-mail. Pay
attention to some examples below!
1. Directly Talk
Example:
Rita : Hey, Ryan! How was the economics competition?
Ryan : Thank God we did. Fortunately we succeeded to get the first place.
Rita : Wow that’s a good job, Ryan! Congratulation on your team success!
Ryan : Thank you very much for saying so, Rita. So, how about your team in
astronomy competition?
Rita : Unfortunately, my team didn’t get the first place. We got the third place,
but I was really happy since we had won over many other teams and gone
that far.
Ryan : That’s the spirit, Rita! I am sure you all did it very well. I congratulate you
on your great success.
Rita : Thank you very much, Ryan. We still have to learn more to be the first like
your team did.
