Expression of Compliment
Look at the dialogue below!
Anna : Congratulations on your winning! You are very talented!
Kiki : Thank you.
The dialogue above is about congratulation someone’s winning. The speaker, Anna, adds a
compliment in her expression. “Congratulations on your winning! You are very talented!” is an
expression of congratulation someone (extended). The extension is “You are very talented!” It is a
compliment.
A compliment is an expression that we use to give praise to someone. In other words, a
compliment is a polite expression of praise or admiration. Complimenting is politely congratulating or
praising someone for something.
The following are expressions of compliment used to congratulate someone.
• What a wonderful performance!
• I must express my admiration to you.
• Great job! / Good job!
• You really did a good job.
• I think you are very great.
The following are the responses of giving compliment.
• Thank you. / Thanks.
• It’s very kind of you to say that.
• Thanks a lot.
• It is very kind of you to say that.
Now, look at the following dialogue!
Nabila : Hi Sari! How are things?
Sari : Fine and you?
Nabila : I’m feeling great today. By the way, congratulations on your nice performance! Your
speech was wonderful. I like it.
Sari : Thank you very much. I’m glad the audience likes my speech.
Nabila : You know what? Your humor in your speech makes us all laugh. It is nice and touching.
Sari : I have made a research before I planned the script.
Nabila : That’s great. No wonder your speech ran well and smoothly.
From the dialogue above, we know that Nabila congratulates Sari on her performance. She uses
an extended expression. That is “Congratulations on your nice performance! Your speech was
wonderful.” She also uses some compliments, such as.
• Your speech was wonderful.
• Your humor in your speech makes us all laugh. It is nice and touching.
• That’s great.
