RECOUNT TEXT
Recount Text is a kind of genre that has social function to retell event for the purpose of
informing or entertaining. The tense that used in recount text is past tense. Social purpose of
recount is to reconstruct past experiences by retelling events in original sequence.
A recount text has three elements:
1. Orientation: Introducing the participants, place and time. Tells who is involved in the story,
when, where, and why the story happened.
2. Series of events: Describing series of event that happened in the past. Tells what happened
in the story
3. Re-orientation: It is optional, stating personal comment of the writer to the story. Tells the
conclusion of the story.
Language Feature of Recount:
· Introducing personal participant: I, my group, etc.
· Using chronological connection: then, first, etc.
· Using linking verb: was, were, saw, heard, etc.
· Using action verb: look, go, change, etc.
· Using simple past tense.
Kinds of Recount Text
Personal recount
These usually retell an event that the writer was personally involved in.
Factual recount
Recording an incident example a science experiment police report.
Imaginative recount
Writing an imaginary role and giving details of events, e.g. a day in the life of a pirate; how I
invented.
