continued to get smaller with the king’s kind gestures.

As the guards helped with the relaxing massage, the
monster became tiny. With another act of kindness to
the monster, he just disappeared.

With each bad word the guards used, the monster
grew more ugly and smelly. The guards got even
angrier—they began to brandish their swords to scare
the monster away from the palace. But (e) he just grew
bigger and bigger, eventually taking up the whole
room. He grew more ugly and smelly than ever.
