                                                                                         clubs sprang up all over. Bicycle races

                                                                                         were popular, especially 100-mile
                                                                                         “centuries.” Cyclists also pushed to get
                                                                                         roads paved—dirt, gravel,

                                                                                         and mud are hard on

                                                                                         worried about the possible
                                                                                         effects of riding too much.
