17 Once inside the Alamo, you see Almaron Dickinson struggling with the
cannons. Nearby, Travis is sending John Smith to the town of Gonzales to
round up volunteers to help fight.
18 You rush to Dickinson’s side. “Is your family safely inside?” you ask.
19 “Yes, Susanna took baby Angelina into the sacristy,” he says. The tiny
sacristy is near the chapel. It’s probably the safest place in the Alamo.
20 As you work on the cannons, more residents make their way into the Alamo.
Some men lead cows into the back pen. Others cart corn into storage rooms.
“We could be locked up in here for weeks,” you mutter to yourself. “I’m glad
we’ll have plenty of food to eat.”
21 Suddenly, you hear a child’s cry for help. You peek through a small
window. Eight-year-old Enrique Esparza is standing below you. The Alamo’s
front gates have already been locked and he can’t get in. You lift him through
the window. “Gracias!” he shouts, as he races to find his father, Gregorio—
one of the volunteer fighters.
22 Just then, William Travis approaches the cannons. “Santa Anna is here!”
he cries, pointing to the San Fernando Church. The Mexicans have raised a
red flag from the bell tower. When Travis sees it, he scowls. “Ha! Santa Anna
wants us to surrender, but we’re not giving up!” He pounds his fist on a
cannon. “Fire it!” he orders. “We’ll never surrender to that tyrant!”
