Lesson 10
Alcohol
My sister Beth just started drinking, but my
mom and dad know nothing about it. She says
that drinking isn’t that bad if one has come of
age. Drinking is her way of saying that she is
old enough to do what she wants with her life,
and expressing independence and freedom. My
sister just turned 16 and has just entered
highschool. She says that many girls of her age
drink, so there is nothing unusual about it. In the
west, she states, teenagers drink, and there is
no law against it. Beth argues that there is noth-
ing bad about drinking as long as one knows
how to control oneself.
Being her younger brother, I feel I have no right to tell her what to do, but
I’m sure that my parents do have the right to know. What should I do? Should I
go behind her back and squeal on her (my sister pleaded me not to rat on her,
or she would squash me like a bug) or should I respect her decision and turn a
blind eye?
