GENRE STUDY Poetry uses images, sounds, and
rhythm to express ideas and feelings. Look for:
• words that rhyme
POWER WORDS
• words or lines that are repeated
promise
• alliteration, or a pattern of words
merrily
with the same first sound
SET A PURPOSE Make pictures in your mind as you
read. Words that tell how things look, sound,
feel, taste, or smell and words about feelings
can help you create mental images.
