Information Technology
as a Profession
Information technology or IT as defined is a branch
of engineering that deals with the use of computers
and telecommunications to retrieve, store, and trans-
mit information. It aids the vast development in global
economy. It is the key ingredient for business trading
in the 21st century. Since technology has advanced
so fast, better use of communication and IT infrastruc-
ture led business to open doors to the international
markets and competition. This triggered the need for a
large number of well-qualified and skilled information
technology professionals. Since technology is always
improving and computers are, becoming faster and
more powerful, companies will invest in new technol-
ogy, which will make their companies run more efficiently but not so costly. IT as a
profession is not limited to hiring only those who graduated in this field. In fact, many
non-technical graduates diverted to IT as a career. A background in basic computer
is needed and so is a good communication skill. Job opportunities have flourished
in the IT field. Compensation varies depending on skills, company size, company
locations and industry. Some of the careers that an IT professional can choose from
include software and hardware engineers, IT consultants, network administrator, and
technical support analyst and data specialist.
