34 Early one August morning, a horse clattered down the
Baltimore streets. “British sails!” its rider shouted. “In the
                    Chesapeake Bay!”

35 Caroline knew British ships meant one thing—invasion.
36 All over Baltimore church bells clanged, calling militiamen
                    to arms.

37 Men and boys shouldered long muskets and lined up on the
                    parade grounds.

38 A snare drum rolled. A bugle flared. A commander shouted,
                    “Forward, march!”

39 The militiamen tramped off to rout the British.
40 All that day, Caroline tried to go about her work.
                41 She sewed.

                42 She swept.
43 She looked for her flag and waited for news.
44 She swept and sewed and waited still more.

45 The next day, Caroline heard a low rumble like a distant
                    thunderstorm.

                46 Cannon.

47 She whispered a prayer for the men.
48 Later, terrible news was again shouted in the streets. The
Americans had fought a battle and lost. Now British troops were

                    headed to destroy Washington.
