Evidence Write an Autobiography
PROMPT
In The Flag Maker, you read the true story of Caroline Pickersgill. She and
others worked for weeks to create the enormous house-size flag that would
one day inspire the writer of our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Pretend that you are Caroline Pickersgill and that you have been asked to
write your autobiography. Rewrite the story told in The Flag Maker from
Caroline’s point of view. Remember that an autobiography is written by
the person the story is about, so you will use pronouns such as I, me, and
we to tell Caroline’s story. Use facts and details from the text to help you
describe how Caroline might have felt that morning. Don’t forget to use
some of the Critical Vocabulary words in your writing.
PLAN
Make a list of expressions that give clues to how Caroline feels. Use
these phrases to help you speak as if you are Caroline.
