Machu Picchu is located high in the Andes Mountains. It is
called the “lost city of the Incas” because nobody knew about it
until it was rediscovered in 1911. An Inca emperor built it in the
1400s. He lived there with around 1,000 people . The buildings
are made of granite smoothed and shaped by talented
stonemasons. The Inca building method did not need mortar. The
area around Machu Picchu was sacred to the Incas. There
are still many mysteries about it today.
