115 “And what if you get a picture? What’ll you do with it?”
116 “I’ll send it directly to Sir Hugh Snufflynose at the Zoological
Society. That’ll set him straight.”
117 I laughed. “I’m sure it will, miss.”
118 “I wish you wouldn’t call me ‘miss.’”
119 “What should I call you?”
120 “Kate, of course.”
121 “If I start calling you Kate now when it’s just the two of us, I might
slip up in public, and that’d be seen as impertinent.”
122 “Silly rules.”
123 “People like you invented them. Not me.”
124 “Good point,” she said appreciatively, a thoughtful crease in her
brow. “Really good point.”
125 “Here’s what I’ll do,” I said. “When I get off duty, I’ll check the
charts and find out when we’ll be closest.”
126 “Thank you. I just hope it’s during daylight.”
