n.
What caused the disappearance of peregrine falcons?
disappearance
n. a thing made by a chemical process
chemical
Scientists discovered it was DDT, a chemical used to
kill insects on crops and trees. Small birds ate insects
that had been poisoned by DDT. Then the falcons ate
the small birds. The DDT built up in the falcons’
bodies and affected their eggs. The eggs had weak
shells, so many never hatched. Fewer and fewer baby
falcons were born.
