Richard
Richard's struggle with alcohol addiction and depression exacted a heavy toll on his life. After years of battling these challenges, he took decisive action to reclaim his well-being.
Richard found himself grappling with the question of what came "rst - his depression or his drinking. Initially, he believed that his depression drove him to drink, but at times, he was convinced it was the other way around. However, as he re#ects on his journey, the origins of his struggles no longer hold signi"cance for Richard.
His relationship with alcohol began at the age of 15, coinciding with his passion for soccer. It was customary to frequent the pub after games, and this routine extended to weeknights and weekends. Despite his athletic pursuits, Richard's aspirations led him to secure a job at a major bank, eventually ascending to a vice-president position while ful"lling his dreams of global travel. However, the mounting responsibilities and pressures of his career led to increased alcohol consumption, impacting his performance at work, and straining his "rst marriage.
The detrimental e!ects of alcohol on his life were further compounded by his inability to sleep, leading to a reliance on alcohol as a coping mechanism. It was during a mandatory health check at work that Richard's struggles came to light, prompting a diagnosis of depression and an urgent referral to a psychologist. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Richard's journey toward recovery.
Following his diagnosis, Richard sought treatment at a rehabilitation clinic, where he found solace in the company of others facing similar challenges. Despite an initial sense of ""xing" himself, Richard experienced a relapse into alcohol consumption, leading to a tumultuous period marked by personal
tragedy and the breakdown of his second marriage. In the depths of despair, Richard attempted to take his own life, but miraculously survived and embarked on a path to recovery.
Determined to turn his life around, Richard pursued various forms of treatment, including medication, counselling, and participation in Alcoholics Anonymous. He also discovered new passions, such as photography and writing, and engaged in community service through volunteering. His resilience and determination were further exempli"ed by a solo motorbike ride around Australia, during which he raised funds for Beyond Blue.
Today, Richard acknowledges that he will always be an alcoholic, a mindset that enables him to recognise and manage his mental health challenges. He emphasises the importance of seeking help when needed and encourages others to be receptive to the support available to them. For Richard, the sequence of his depression and alcohol addiction is no longer a point of concern; instead, he focuses on managing both aspects of his well-being with a newfound sense of purpose and resilience.
