community engagement, exhibitions, talks,
screenings, and artistic commissions. We
aim to deliver impact to disenfranchised
and underrepresented communities.
Our opportunities are co-designed with
communities affected by social injustice,
including racism, socio-economic dis-
advantage, disability, neurodiversity, and
experiences with the migration system.
The Centre of Memory & Learning is more
than a museum. It’s a space to celebrate
the deep bond between South Africa and
the UK, showcase South African culture,
honour the power of international Audience participation at one of our cultural heritage
themed talks, this one held to mark South African
solidarity and engage with the legacy Women’s Day in 2022
and values of struggle heroes, including
prominent ones like Nelson Mandela and lesser known but significant contributors, with
a focus on women and the invaluable contributions of ordinary people, to the struggle for
freedom and equality.
Engaging Contemporary Communities
Exhibitions, an archive, dedicated learning spaces and a wellbeing garden will connect
this history to contemporary communities. A collection of circa 5,000 objects of anti-
apartheid movement ephemera will complement exhibits and oral histories. The
Centre’s regular programme of arts, cultural and educational events will reach circa
25,000 visitors each year and a similar number again online, including 5,000 people
as programme participants. Online platforms will extend our international reach. Our
website received 35,000 unique visitors in its first year of launching. Circa 20% of our
web traffic is international, with the majority of this from South Africa.
Formal Learning in schools is one of eight programme strands. Shown is a secondary school class engaging in an
“Art and Protest” workshop
