Musician Q & A

Have any new opportunities presented themselves?

This summer I participated in the first-ever virtual Baroque Performance Institute
at Oberlin. Though it was not the same as being in Oberlin, I still learned a lot and
enjoyed reconnecting virtually with my baroque buddies from previous years. I was
also supposed to attend the Portland Bach Festival for the first time as an emerging
artist, as well as the American Bach Soloists Academy in San Francisco, but those
opportunities have been postponed until next summer. Hopefully it will be safe to
travel and gather in groups by then.

Have any of your other groups played since the spring?
Yes, I’ve been involved in a few virtual performances. One group, the Apollo Ensemble
of Boston, gave a live-streamed concert of music for strings in September. The
program included Schoenberg’s ravishing Verklärte Nacht. (A couple of rehearsals for — est. 1996 —
that concert were held outdoors in my garden in Cambridge.) Online conferencing has
made it possible for another of my regular ensembles, the Harvard Baroque Chamber Handcarved with knives and chisels
Orchestra, to continue collaboration on a virtual performance of Handel’s Messiah. in our working studio.
Most of the groups I perform with are on hold, though. 63 Court Street

Since I have fewer commitments keeping me in and around Boston, my husband www.yankeewoodcarvers.com
and I have gotten to spend a lot more time at our second home in Vermont. It’s
absolutely beautiful up here and could not possibly be more peaceful. In a former life
I studied English literature and still love to read, so having to stay at home has also
meant catching up with books I didn’t think I had time for before, especially rangy
encyclopedic novels like Don DeLillo’s Underworld and David Foster Wallace’s Infinite NEW ENGLAND’S
Jest. I’ve also been reading and writing more poetry. ONLY SELF SERVE

What do you look forward to most when life returns to
       normal?

What I look forward to more than anything else is sharing live music with people in
person again, off screen and on stage. Plymouth is one of my favorite places to make
music. The conducting, the programming, and the playing are all top-notch, but so
is the support of the community. The love in Memorial Hall has been fantastically
palpable at every performance I’ve played with the Phil. I can hardly wait to return. 48 WINES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
