Chapter 13
Toupee
Toupee Technology:
Toupee technology has come a long way in the last fifty years; it always
used to be possible to spot a toupee, they always looked a sort of greenish
khaki in colour, which was in complete contrast to the wearer’s own hair
colour, and they just seem to sit in a lump on top of the head. Toupee
technology has improved in many areas. The base used to be netting to
which so many thick Oriental Non-Remi hairs were knotted, making it
look so unnatural. When you think about it, if someone needs a toupee
you can be sure that the amount of hair he has left, is likely to be sparse
and very thin. Modern toupee bases are very light silk netting that fits the
head like a scull cap. The hair is colour matched also the right thickness
and density of hair is used, giving a natural look all over. Base
technology in stock bought toupees is incredible. Stock toupees are pre-
made and held in stock until ordered. They are made in all hair colours
and hand knotted to a medium density. Indian Remi Hair is used because
of its medium thickness. The new skin base toupees are easy to clean
with shampooing, and can be cut to fit any bald areas. Toupees were
originally held in place by using spirit gum. Sometime later double-sided
toupee tape became the main method of attachment. In the last ten years
a protein adhesive that is used in hip operations has been used with much
success for the hand knotted silk base only. This method of attachment is
done on a contract basis by monthly payments. The adhesive last for
about three months before it loosens. So, every three months a new
toupee is fitted and the old one thrown away.
