SQUARE LASHING
Square Lashing is used to bind two poles together securely at a 90
degree angle. It is stronger and more permanent than the transom
knot (see page 23) but takes longer to tie and uses more rope or
cord. Square lashing is particularly useful for creating a rectangular
frame or building a light framework.
1 Position the two poles at a 90 degree angle and tie a clove hitch (see
page 54) around the vertical pole just below the horizontal pole.

• Building light structural frameworks.
• Building garden trellis, arches or gazebos.
