President’s Letter February 2022
I don’t know about you but I really dislike January and February. It seems like a never- ending slog in the dark and cold; ‘a grinding time’ as a poet friend calls it, which of course got me thinking about poetry. The Romantic poets had a lot to say about Spring, many descriptions of lambs and spring flowers but one of my favourite poets Philip Larkin wrote:-
The trees are coming into leaf
like something almost being said; (....)
Last year is dead, they seem to say, begin afresh, afresh, afresh
I love the hesitancy in the 2nd line of something ‘almost’ being said, which is a perfect way to describe the gradual unfolding of new leaves and then the way the poem ends boldly with almost a battle cry of ‘afresh, afresh, afresh’.
