’Father’ and had been pushed away by him initially during his study period, but possibly also with the separation. Following Mag Carb Boris passed a reasonable amount of faeces but one week later it is like he has given up. He takes himself off and seems fed up. His anemia returned (PCV 13%) and he just wants to be left alone to sleep.
November 7th: At this stage Boris is assessed at a conventional referral centre. They perform an exploratory surgery, mainly to assess the swelling of the scrotum which has got worse, as a possible underlying factor in his constipation should there be a hernia present. There is only a mild inguinal hernia, which is not thought to be significant, but noticeable splenic enlargement. Tests confirm a diagnosis of an autoimmune reaction targeted at the reticulocytes. It is decided that he is not a good candidate for more aggressive surgery, another enema is given and he is discharged for further homeopathic treatment.
I repeated a single dose of Nat Mur 10M based on his very depressed state and started the spleen organ support remedy Ceanothus 200c. He was also taking some Lactulose daily.
Following this his bowel movements gain some regularity thankfully. His main problem now is back to the paws but the problem has now shifted to the left paw carpal area which is swollen and very painful to touch. It seemed to swap sides in a matter of one day.
I recalled a lecture in which David Lilly described the alternating sides of the remedy Carcinosin and a split dose is given of 200c potency. There is concern that this is a septic condition, different from swelling seen before, and some antibiotics are dispensed if improvement is not seen with this remedy.
December 15th: Following the Carcinosin Boris experienced an aggravation for about 5 days with loose stools containing blood and mucus. This then resolved
accompanied by improved state of mind. This remained until the constipation started to creep back in again.
The PCV had returned to 24% (24-45). His left paw was still very painful but there looked to be some healing from the margins of the ulceration on the pad for the first time, which finally crusted over leaving a dry scab. The swelling of the left carpus was still there but less painful. There was some concern regarding the stability of this joint with excess valgus deviation of the foot on stressing the carpus. Septic arthritis was still a possibility and and aspirate and cytology from the area showed neutrophils supporting this diagnosis.
Unfortunately Boris then went into a rapid decline with his constipation, suffering severe vomiting and dehydration. He was seriously withdrawn. Euthanasia was elected after much discussion with his ‘Parents’.
This case has given much cause for thought over the years and I’ve pondered the roll of suppression, with the constipation seeming to come on as the feet improved. But this had initially improved on the remedy also. I felt that the anaemia was a sign of deep pathology and its improvement an indicator of things going in the right direction. However the constipation remained.
I feel that more emphasis should have been made on his unique emotional characteristics than the use of local remedies as his symptoms changed over time, demon- strated by the lack of response to any remedy prescribed at the local level.
I remember a lecture on Lanthanides that Liesbeth Ellinger gave at one of the BAHVS conferences. She mentioned the roll they may have to play in autoimmune conditions so they may have been of benefit here. And at a later conference Stefan Kohlrausch presented an interesting lecture on Family Dynamics and Interdependent illness. I felt very strongly that the maintaining cause here was the
emotional environment in which Boris had to live, as the emotional conflict between his ‘Mum’ and ‘Dad’ was played out at home. In addition to this the personification of him by turning him into a surrogate child made him all the more vulnerable. Purebred cats I feel are particularly at risk, the breeding having enhanced certain emotional characteristics appealing to humans, and creating a greater human bond. They are also more likely to be kept as indoor cats and so are unable to express their natural instincts. Perhaps a dose of Lac Humanum would have been of benefit to shift this obstacle to cure or potentised blood from the person he has the strongest bond with, something shown to have been of benefit in a case Stefan presented.
Obviously I cannot now give these remedies in retrospect but hope that a similar case in the future may benefit from the sharing of experiences obtained by attending events such as the next BAHVS conference.
