 BAHVS Congress 2014 – York
Report by Sara Fox Chapman, USA
This was a trial two day conference; it began with a Friday evening pre-conference get together at the home of Stuart and Chris Marston. Transport difficulties took their toll; Chris’s delicious kitchen supper could easily have served three times our number. Those of us who attended enjoyed a warm welcome with Yorkshire portions! Fortunately, the train, auto, and Bongo (the camper van, not the drum or
It was a wee surprise that there were no printed proceedings for the Congress. However, we had plenty of paper and pens, so no worries there. Additionally, the main speakers made / will be making their notes available in soft copy, to be shared with the group.
And now, a recap of the Congress event!

Steven Kayne of Freeman’s Homeopathic Pharmacy and Saltire Books presented a quaich to Peter Gregory (in absentia, as Bongo was not yet mended) in recognition of publishing his first book through Saltire. Saltire have new books in the pipeline from Jeremy Sherr, as well as Vermeulen’s Prisma series, and they are always looking for new material.
Jonathan and Ruth of Honey’s Real Dog Food are sponsoring an e-learning student. They ask us to advise them of our needs; they are preparing some new booklets on the basics of raw feeding, cancer, and common problems. They have samples of Beautiful Joe’s treats available, and are implementing a Buy One Give One programme, with the donated treats going to shelter dogs.
Caroline, Claire, and Mel of Nature’s Menu provide nutritionally balanced raw diets and freeze dried treats. They have done research intended to help dispel the myths about the dangers of raw feeding.
Nutra Vet manufactures nutraceuticals to EU standards with just active ingredients in their products. This minimises the quantity of product that must be given to the animal. Direct purchasing keeps prices down.
antelope) difficulties were sorted out so that all were able to enjoy the conference, even if they were a bit delayed.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Homeopathy at the Coal Face” and there was a coal resonance in the venue: The National Railway Museum (NRM). The break room for the conference facility overlooked the large locomotive exhibit hall – quite an impressive view. Delegates were also able to visit all the NRM facilities during breaks if they wished. The staff of NRM were extremely pleasant and helpful. The breakfasts and lunches were quite tasty, and well labelled for those with dietary considerations. The facilities were good for the exhibitors as well, with a large exhibit area between the lecture room and break room. I wouldn’t normally mention the loo facilities, however, it was so nice to have a roomy women’s loo just a few doors down from the lecture hall. Men had to go downstairs; unlucky, chaps!
Going Down in Homeopathy
Geoff briefly discussed the means by which we analyse cases, such as Jeremy Sherr’s ruthless rubrics, studying polarities in the case, use of the periodic table, kingdoms, constitutional analysis and mapa mundi. He then presented a skin case, and showed how all of these methods could give us information to find the appropriate remedy for this patient. Geoff has been reading Scholten’s newest book, a hernia inducing tome called Wonderful Plants. He briefly explained how this book links the plants with the periodic table, showing the correlations between plant families and rows of the periodic table.
After a break, Geoff presented another case, illustrating the utility of sarcodes in prescribing. We are familiar with using sarcodes in cases where individuals lack certain hormones. This case linked the sarcodes to the periodic table as well, with male themes in row 4, and female themes in row 3 and the Lanthanide series. I look forward to carefully examining the notes, which Geoff has supplied, to see how I can apply these principles in my own practice.
