and giving it some thought I decided for Sulphur, because of prominent skin problems and because my first impression was that she doesn’t belong to plant kingdom. She got Sulphur Q2 for 2 weeks every day; we stopped Glucatim, but we didn’t stop Alupurinol yet.
Follow up: After 2 weeks her skin was less red and itchy. Hair looked almost normal. We decided to wait for few more weeks. 4 weeks later her skin was completely fine and we decided to gradually stop Alupurinol. 1 month later she wasn’t getting any medicine and looked completely healthy. 4 months later we decided to test her for leishmania titre again. It came back <1:20.
In November the owner decided to take her to Spain with her. Immediately after coming back to Spain, Grace started to have panic attacks when outside, when seeing people, especially men. Her skin got all red, scaly and itchy again. She was collapsing and they could only go out of the house in the night.
The owner took her to the veterinary clinic without contacting me; they said it was allergy and prescribed corticosteroids for 2 weeks. A few days later they returned home and she told me what happened. We stopped corticosteroids (it was short acting and she had taken it for 1 week) and gave her Sulphur C30 for 1 week. She never had any serious problems since then. In spring she usually starts to scratch a little bit more and she gets Sulphur C30 once and it stops after that. The owner keeps Sulphur C30 at hand and if she thinks there could be anything going on she gives her one dose and as far as I know that happens a few times a year, besides spring scratching. I am aware that this is not an ideal scenario but in that case it works the best. We also tested her Leishmania titre every 6 months, last time was October 2019, and so far test always came back <1:20.
2.) Female dog, Loty, Flat Coat Retriever Date of birth: 10.4.2011
Date of case taking: 27/12/2018
Spayed at 7 months of age, regulary vaccinated, regulary getting Nexgard Spectra and Dehinel (praziquantel)
Problem: Chronic inflammation of both ears, since 7 months old, with itching, head shaking and redness. Some years she is on medicine (antibiotics, corticosteroids, locally and systemically) 6 months of the year.
Shortsummary:
Everything started right after spaying surgery, when she had to wear plastic, protective collar, she hated.
Since then ear inflammation repeats every few months. The owners don’t recognise any pattern, season that would make things worse. Right before consultation, she finished 6 months long treatment for Malassezia for both ears, always both. She came from very nice litter of 9 puppies and upbringing was very good. She is by far the biggest dog of the whole litter. Everything was fine with her until she was spayed. From then on her ears are always a problem and she is scared of veterinarians.
Otherwise she is very energetic dog, self-assured (or at least she wants to give that impression), wants to be the centre of the universe. From the moment she arrived in her new family, everything has to happen around her. They renovated the flat, so she has free access to outdoors, they don’t have a fence around
the property. She is very demanding and if she doesn’t get what she want she feels insulted and wants to go away, outside preferably. Adores outside activities like hiking and swimming, where things are
not boring, but doesn’t want to go running with owners or running by the bike, she needs to be animated all the time or she gets bored. She likes to play rough. She doesn’t have dog friends; either she ignores other dogs or actively shows that they shouldn’t annoy her, with growling and hackles up. She behaves well when free, but on the leash she acts terribly.
She loves people, or more correctly, the attention she gets from them, but if children are too persistent she will walk away.
When asleep she dreams very actively and always moves legs and barks. She loves a soft bed. She doesn’t like to be combed. She prefers colder weather; when very hot outside she puts herself to hibernation. She adores water, but never goes in by herself. You have to throw her something or go with her; she is able to wait for hours and look at you impatiently. The owner says she is afraid of new things that break her routine. She is very greedy for food, but will not eat anything raw. She adores butter.
The owner is very attached to her and is very afraid that she will develop some tumours because of all that treatment she had in past 7 years. During the consultation Loty was walking from the owner to the door and scratched the door all the time.
