One month later the cough and the panting are completely gone.
Five months later: ‘’She is so good, she bounces around, everybody says how amazing it is.’’

Rosie is a typical black Labrador. She is about 7 years old, when I see her to help her with arthritis in the toes of her front paws. Her front toes are typically splayed out, nobly and slightly deformed like one can see often in older dogs, but she is not that old. This is a reasonably common affection, which tends to be difficult to treat.

She comes in the consult room and greets me straight away and then goes sniffing around the room, wagging her tail.
The owner starts by talking about something that happened, when she was young: they had moved house temporarily and all the dogs (I think there were three) had been lethargic, not happy. They were not comfortable in the new home. Then they moved to the house they now live in but the older dog remained quite ill.
‘’When this older dog died (Allie), Rosie took over the role

of this dog in what the owner said was ‘staying with me’. She was 4 years old then. It was incredible. I had not expected this. It felt as if she thought that because her mum did this she should take over, when she died.
She was never a dog that naturally came to us. She would come for a bit of love, a bit of give and take of love, it was a comfort thing. She has always been the nervous excitable talking dog. She was a total teenager hurtling around with incredible energy. She always has been faster than all the other dogs.
In the new house all the dogs improved and were well again. But initially, Rosie was quite reserved: she had to re-establish
