choleretics, antifibrotic agents and low protein diets are indicated. Fluid therapy and fluids of choice are isotonic and limited in lactate content. Potassium chloride (15-20 meq/lt). Also 5%-10% glucose saline solution.
As can be seen, conventional treatment requires the patient to have a healthy digestive tract for the correct assimilation of the drugs. Consequently, and based on the information already referred to on allopathic treatment, for the particular case of the canine Nico, it was concluded that traditional therapy was unfeasible.
This is when veterinary homeopathy becomes the best treatment option, mainly due to its characteristic quality of treating the patient's symptoms through a single substance, which is very well tolerated as it is of natural origin and, being diluted and dynamised, on the one hand reduces the risk of toxicity and, on the other, exacerbates its medicinal virtues.
The first consultation with the dog took place on 25 May 2021. The guardians reported that in addition to the problems already mentioned, since 2020 the canine had episodes of yellow vomiting and stated that on 16 May 2021. He slept on the bed of the carer, but when he got up
he lost his balance and began "to walk with the right side of his body, circling repeatedly".
Photo 2. The owners report that since 2020 Nico has had frequent episodes of yellow vomiting.
Nico was taken to a veterinarian, where he underwent blood tests, and they found that he
continued to have liver failure, and at that time he also had renal failure.
For treatment he was prescribed oral prednisolone tablets 5 mg 1⁄2 tablet every 12 hours for 7 days and a suspension based on Cynara extract, choline chloride and hepatic extract as hepatoprotective oral 0.4 ml every 12 hours for 10 days. However, the prescribed treatment did not resolve the symptoms troubling the animal, and the guardians sought the advice of a relative, who was treating their dog with homeopathy. They recommended taking him to the Homeovet veterinary clinic.
On arrival at the Homeovet veterinary clinic, the guardians were questioned, and the dog was evaluated. It was found to be in an altered mental state with exacerbated restlessness and anxiety that could lead to aggression if contradicted, with increased sexual desire and constant urges to 'mount' a child with whom he lives.
Additionally, vestibular syndrome is observed, which is ruled out as being caused by internal otitis, the heart rate is 84 beats/min, pulse 84 beats/min, respiratory rate 34 breaths/min; rales are heard bilaterally in the lungs, the pet's temperature is 37 degrees. He has pink mucous membranes, the capillary refill time cannot be taken due to his aggressiveness, he weighs 6.3 kg.
The work-up is based on the diagnostic tests previously performed, and it is suggested that a couple of additional tests to be performed to clarify the cause of the neurological condition. The following is the list of laboratory tests performed prior to treatment on 19 and 25 May 2021.
1. Complete blood count.
2. Urea Nitrogen (BUN).
3. Creatinine.
4. Alkaline phosphatase.
5. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
6. Urea.
7. Partial urine.
8. Serology for the detection of antibodies against
Toxoplasma Gondii (latex agglutination technique).
9. Detection of canine IgG antibody to Neospora caninum
(indirect immunofluorescence technique).
Diagnostic list
1. Behavioural disorder (aggression / ecstasy / restlessness / anxiety / masturbation / mania).
2. Leukocytosis due to neutrophilia. 3. Hyperalbuminaemia.
4. Renal failure.
5. Hepatic insufficiency.
6. Canine neosporosis. 7. Bronchitis.
8. Bilateral blindness. 9. Bilateral hearing loss.
With the totality of the clinical findings and the laboratory results, the homeopathic repertorisation is carried out and the medicine BELLADONA 30 CH is formulated in oral suspension, 3 drops every 6 hours (during the day), for 30 days, after 7 strong succussions to the bottle.
Repertorization 1
The follow-up is recommended 30 days after the beginning of the treatment, however Nico doesn’t returns until Thursday 26th August 2021, after 90 days, for another reason for consultation. The guardians report that after the initial treatment the dog showed a significant improvement and did not consider it necessary to comply with the recommendation to carry out the monthly check- up.
They state that the new reason for consultation was that Nico woke up on Monday 23 August 2021, fell out of bed, vomited yellow and "had not eaten for four days". Once again, the guardians were questioned, and the patient was
