Introduction
The case
Patient
“Tia”. Labrador F DoB May 1995 (aged 15 months when seen).
Social history
Lives at home with the owners (a married couple) and four other Labradors [of varying ages], including her mother.
History of presenting complaint
Tia had always been a very active, energetic dog, but recently it had become a problem. She was hard to train, difficult to control, and she would race around so fast she could run straight into anyone or anything in the way at full speed, apparently being unaware they were there.
Past history
First vaccinations [full course] given in September 1995, booster one year later. No other health problems.
Family history
The mother is owned by the same owner, and is the opposite temperament, being very
quiet, easy-going, and gentle natured. The father was also believed to have been much calmer.
Homeopathic history
Appearance: Lean, well-muscled, long-legged, athletic look.
Demeanour: Was on the go from the moment she arrived. No sign of anxiety but she actively
This is the second of 10 cases from my VetMFHom exam case book, 1997. This was one of my first attempts to treat a behavioural disturbance case, and taught me the extraordinary depth which homeopathy can work, gently adjusting a deeper “invisible” disturbance, as compared to chemical suppression or manipulation.
The case is presented exactly as written in my original case book (including any grammatical and punctuation errors!). Any additions or clarifications in the original text will appear in square brackets.
Perhaps I should warn from the start that one of my all-time favourite homeopathic books is “Homoeopathic Drug Pictures” by Dr Margaret Tyler (1857-1943), the first edition of which was written in 1942, and the last (3rd) edition in 1952 (4 years before I was born). She was working at the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital (where she was the Dean from 1913 to 1943) the day before she died, aged 86! She was a truly remarkable woman, and a genuine pioneer for homeopathy in the 20th century. In a book of over 800 entertaining pages, she shares multiple insights and anecdotes on over 120 remedies. It is a wonderful “dip into” book, which can leave an indelible picture of the remedy in your mind, with her vibrant recollections of patients and colourful descriptions. My later reflections follow more her writing style, so please excuse my lateral meanderings!
