As you may be aware, giving is a strong element of our ethos.We have never turned a good cause away empty handed and between free hampers, free books and cash donations we are currently helping to raise between £30,000 and £40,000 a year. Hardly a fortune, but for a small company a significant sum.
We are now dividing our cash donations between the World Land Trust (of which Jonathan is a trustee) and Compassion inWorld Farming (CIWF).We spent a long time researching the latter organisation.What decided us in its favour is the fact that half its board are vegetarian or vegan.We also like their approach of trying to change the farm industry from within.Yes, it is vital for organisations like PETA to act as sticks, but it is no less vital for organisations like CIWF to act as carrots.
Incidentally, we serve a large number of vegetarian
and vegan customers and we are frequently asked how we can be in the business of killing animals given our own ethical beliefs. If it were not for dogs, cats and
all the other types of domesticated animal the vast majority of people living in developed nations would have no contact with any species other than their fellow
