Joseph P. Murphy
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously to Captain Joseph P. Murphy, United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving as a Pilot of an EF-10B aircraft with Marine Composite Reconnaissance Squadron ONE on 13 December 1966. Captain Murphy participated in an electronic countermeasure mission in support of a large United States Navy airstrike in North Vietnam. Despite adverse weather in the target area and harassment by enemy aircraft alerts and surface-to-air missile sightings, he courageously
remained on station providing critical support until all friendly aircraft departed the target area. His expert airmanship and valiant
fighting spirit contributed materially to the mission’s success and the enemy’s inability to claim any friendly aircraft with their radar-controlled systems. By his exceptional aeronautical ability, dauntless courage and unfaltering devotion to duty, Captain Murphy reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Ronald J. Perkins
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Ronald J. Perkins for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 pilot near Dak Seang Civilian Irregular Defense Group Camp, Republic of Vietnam, on 13 April 1970. On that date, Lieutenant Perkins supported friendly ground forces engaged with hostile ground soldiers. Despite intense ground fire, marginal
weather, and with friendly forces in close proximity, Lieutenant Perkins made devastating attacks against the hostile positions. The professional competence,
aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Perkins reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
Geoffrey Darling
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Geoffrey Darling, Warrant Officer W1, United States Army, 121st Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 27 February 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Darling distinguished himself by
exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a transport helicopter during a combat assault mission in An Xuyen Province. His aircraft
received extensive damage from intense enemy fire while inserting troops in various landing zones, but with complete disregard for his safety, he continued in the insertions. His continuation of the mission at a critical time insured the later success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
