Leonard V. Porter, Jr.
William C. Dill
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to 1st Lt. Leonard V. Porter, Jr., for extraordinary heroism in aerial flight, while participating in aerial operations against the enemy, on 15 October 1944. Before reaching the target, the lead plane had to return to the base because of an engine failure and 1st Lt. Porter being the senior pilot in the formation assumed command of the formation and successfully led the Squadron over the target. Despite the enemy fighter interceptors and heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire encountered, the squadron was able to get 100% hits in the target area. Throughout this mission, 1st Lt. Porter displayed high professional skill and devotion to duty which exemplifies the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces and of the United States Naval Service.
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Mr. William C. Dill for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot (Captain) of the China National Aviation Corporation from 9 October 1944 to 14 August 1945. During this period, Mr. Dill’s exemplary knowledge and outstanding airmanship displayed under extremely hazardous conditions, culminated in highly successful aerial support to Allied military operations flying “Hump” missions between India and
China during World War II. With Japanese
fighter aircraft on the prowl, the 550+ mile “Hump” flights were extremely hazardous over the world’s
toughest terrain, in unpredictable weather conditions, and with poor navigational aids. Mr. Dill completed 97 round trips totaling over 825 flying hours serving as either a co-pilot or first pilot during these very dangerous missions. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Mr. Dill reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
Alberto Capone
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant Alberto Capone for extraordinary
achievement while participating in aerial flight as a
C-123 Loadmaster at An Hoa, Republic of Vietnam,
on 14 October 1969. Despite heavy ground fire, Sergeant Capone’s crew completed two vitally needed emergency resupply sorties into the small airstrip. By virtue of his planning and skill, ground
time and exposure to the hostile environment were held to the absolute minimum. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Capone reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
