#1 The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Dale S. Emerson, Warrant Officer W-1, United States Army, Company C, 228th Aviation Battalion (Assault Support Helicopter), for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Emerson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 18 November 1967, while serving as a pilot of a CH-47A helicopter
during a combat support mission near Song Mao,
Republic of Vietnam. When his aircraft came under intense hostile fire and burst into flames, Warrant Officer Emerson skillfully landed the helicopter into enemy controlled territory. He then assisted in the evacuation of the passengers from the burning aircraft. Warrant Officer Emerson’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Emerson, Warrant Officer W-2, United States Army, Company C, 228th Aviation Battalion (Assault Support Helicopter), for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer Emerson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 26 March 1968, while serving as a pilot of a CH-47 aircraft, during a
rescue mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When an
aircraft was downed in enemy controlled terrain, Chief Warrant Officer Emerson immediately went to the aid of the downed crew. Disregarding his own personal safety, he hovered his helicopter over the crash area until all the downed crewmembers were rescued. Chief Warrant Officer Emerson’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
John L. Yantis, Jr.
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to John L. Yantis, Jr., First Lieutenant, Air Corps, Fighter Group, for actions dated September 24, 1942 to May 31, 1943. The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded to First Lieutenant Yantis, pilot, for extraordinary achievement by participating in more than fifty combat missions over Burma and China during which exposure to enemy fire was probable and expected. These flights consisted of bombing, offensive reconnaissance, ground strafing and escort far over enemy territory, have resulted in the destruction of much enemy material and installations. These operations in which First Lieutenant Yantis has flown, constitute acts of extraordinary achievement in aerial flight and reflect the highest credit on the military forces of the United States.
