William S. Davies
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major William S. Davies for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Aircraft Commander at Landing Zone Evans, Republic of Vietnam on 14 March 1968. On that date, despite sporadic hostile mortar and rocket attack on the newly opened assault zone, Major Davies landed and delivered vitally needed supplies and replacement troops to the friendly forces heavily engaged against an opposing armed hostile force.
Realizing that his aircraft would present a lucrative target, he exhibited calm judgment and outstanding professional ability in the face of grave danger by
keeping ground time to a minimum. As a result, he had his aircraft airborne just as the next volley came in, thus averting possible equipment damage and injury to his crew and passengers. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Davies reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
Charles E. Marz
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Charles E. Marz who distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as a B-52G Navigator near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 20 December 1972. On that date, as a crewmember of a B-52G bomber, engaged in the largest conventional bombing raid ever amassed in the history of aerial warfare, Captain Marz’s aircraft received significant battle damage. With great courage and highly professional coordination, his crew did deliver their bombs on the specified target, thus destroying the massed supplies, communications and transportation lines, which could have provided the capacity to initiate an offensive against the Republic of Vietnam and the United
States support forces. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Marz reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
