Benefits of Reading
As an intellectual thing, a publication is prototypically a makeup of such great length that it requires
a considerable investment of time to write and a still considerable, though not so extensive,
investment time to browse. In the limited sense, a book is a self-sufficient section or portion of a
longer article, a use that reflects the fact that, in antiquity, long functions had to be written on many
scrolls, and each scroll had to be identified from the publication it contained. Therefore, for
example, each part of Aristotles Physics is referred to as a book. In the unrestricted sense, a
publication is the compositional whole of which such sections, whether called chapters or books or
parts, are components.
The intellectual content in a physical book does not need to be a makeup, nor even be called a
book. Books can consist only of drawings, engravings, or photos, or such matters as crossword
puzzles or cut-out dolls. At a physical book, the pages may be left blank or may contain an abstract
set of lines as service for continuing entries, e.g., an account book, an appointment book, an
autograph book, a notebook, a journal, or a sketchbook. Some physical publications are created
with pages thick and sturdy enough to encourage other physical objects, like a scrapbook or
picture album. Books may be distributed in electronic form as e-books along with other formats.
Although in normal academic parlance a monograph is understood to be a professional academic
work, rather than a reference work on a single scholarly topic, in library and information science
monograph denotes more broadly every non-serial book complete in one volume (book) or a finite
number of volumes (a novel like Prousts seven-volume In Search of Lost Time), compared to serial
publications like a magazine, journal, or newspaper. A store where books are bought and sold is a
bookshop or bookstore. Books can also be sold everywhere. Books can also be borrowed from
libraries. Google has estimated that as of 2010, roughly 130,000,000 different titles were
published. In some wealthier countries, the selling of published books has decreased because of
the increased usage of e-books.
In the 2000s, due to the growth in availability of cheap handheld computing devices, the
opportunity to share texts via digital means became an appealing alternative for media publishers.
The expression e-book is a contraction of"electronic book"; it pertains to a book-length publication
in digital form. An e-book is usually made available through the world wide web, but also on CD-
ROM along with other forms. E-Books may be read either using a computing device with an LED
screen like a traditional computer, a smartphone or a tablet computer; or by means of a mobile e-
ink screen device known as an e-book reader, like the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo
eReader, or even the Amazon Kindle. E-book readers attempt to mimic the experience of reading a
print book by employing this technology, because the displays on e-book readers are much less
reflective.
