Retail stores are not typically considered an “unsafe” work environment. However, depart-
ment stores and main street retail stores can present many hazards, as with any industry.
Each workplace is different, and employers should know what dangers exist to create a safe
workplace. Here are some of the most common hazards in the retail industry:
•Ladders - all employees should be trained on how to use a ladder properly and safe-
ly, including the 4 to 1 rule (4ft up = 1ft out) and correct ladder inspection.
•Overstocking Shelves - employees should be taught proper stocking techniques
such as heavy items on the bottom and light items on the top.
•Cuts - box cutter and knife safety should be an emphasis in any training program.
•Electric Shock - unqualified employees should never attempt to fix any electrical
issues.
•Standing - employees should be given frequent breaks to sit down and soft mats to
stand on.
•Lifting - proper lifting procedures should be stressed to all employees.
