2025 Governors Educator of the Year Award-
Katie Luker Cherney
Katie Luker Cherney, a New Hartford class of 2002 graduate, was awarded the
2025 New Jersey Governor’s Teacher of the Year award for Ocean County. Katie
teaches 8th grade Social Studies at Southern Regional Middle School Ocean County,
New Jersey.
Her nomination brings to light her positive contributions and “an unwavering
commitment to the academic, social, and emotional growth of her students”. She is
adviser to the Leo Club, and the Lightening Team lead where she mentors student
teachers and field experience observers. Katie is also a volunteer Girl Scout Troop
leader, CCD coordinator and volunteer with the RWJ Barnabas Health Field of
Dreams (a park for special needs families). Katie is a 2006 graduate of Siena College
and holds a master’s degree from Utica College. She resides in Toms River, NJ with
her husband Keith and three children.
