I AM A MAN: Mind, Body and Soul
Personal & Social Responsibility Workshop
March 20, 2021
Presented by Tri-Chairs: Links Tahnda Bailey, Sonya Lockett & La Shawn Denise Witt
On April 4, 1968, the day he was assassinated, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a nonviolent march of Negro sanitation workers on strike for equitable wages and improved working conditions. They carried placards inscribed “I AM A MAN”.
Today, our Achievers as well as young men of color across the country, have lived through Amhad Aubry, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Jacob Blake and countless others. They know that often in the eyes of this country young Black & Brown men are not created equal. What affect does this constant erasure have on the health of our young men of color as they are preparing to make their way in the world? As we continue through this season of civil and racial unrest, the Personal and Social Responsibility workshop addressed health and wellness with a lens on fortifying young Black men as they work their way through this season of racial reckoning.
 Panelist: Chris Cathcart
Panelist: Brent Tilley, Alumni Achiever – Class of 1992

Affirmation from today: Be unique in the brand that you build so that you can
provide something which others cannot.
~
Thank you so much for the informational session today. At the end of the day when everything was being summed up, I heard a quote that I think I’m going to write down and hang on my wall. The quote was, “You have to believe in your values so strong that you are willing to lose friends over them.”
I’ve always had a hard time deciding who I should associate with so that was really helpful to me. I have to make sure that I choose friends with the same values as me, which may mean losing a few of the ones I currently have.
Thank you again for allowing me to join the session today. I couldn’t have asked for
better presenters or a better topic.

I would say one of the largest takeaways that I could pull from the people who
presented today was the importance of caring for the mental and physical wellness of myself in the coming future. Going into college, understanding how to manage my time, as well as my focus will be the ultimate goal and ensuring that I achieve great things in the future.
