Great South (The regional tourism development agency)
Great south has identified Gore and the surrounding area as an important strategic position for developing a tour-
ism route through from Queenstown, Dunedin and further north to add value to existing destinations such as Bluff.
Mountain Biking has also been identified by Great South as a potential tourism draw for Southland as a whole. A
letter of support from Great South is included in appendix 2.
“The Waikaia trail trust trail network plan will be complimentary to the region’s existing mountain bike opportunities
already offered. As a https://greatsouth.nz/storage/app/media/southland-murihiku-destination-strategy-the-strate-

“The Waikaia Trail Trust trail network plan will be complimentary to the region’s existing mountain bike opportunities
already offered. As additional cycling products develop it allows expansion of our region’s cycling-centric itineraries
and marketing proposition, ultimately encouraging an increase in visitor length of stay to explore what is on offer.”
Southland Mountain Bike Club
Southland Mountain Bike Club is engaged in a development plan for Bluff Hill and believes a facility in the north of
Southland could add value and potentially increase visits to Bluff. They also believe this facility will up-skill commu-
nities further and state the facility could be used as part of a Southland race series as well as other events. A letter of
support is included in appendix 2.

“For riders the opportunity to experience professionally built trails on non-aggressive terrain will be second to none
in Southland and will attract riders to the park. I have no doubt riders from larger centres like Dunedin, Invercargill
and central Otago will regularly utilise a bike park at Waikaia”.
Mountain Bike New Zealand
“Since 1992 Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ) has been the national body
for mountain biking in New Zealand and it is responsible for supporting the de-
velopment and growth of both competitive and recreational mountain biking.
Mountain Bike New Zealand and Cycling New Zealand work together to grow
and develop mountain biking as a sport for New Zealanders, through promot-
ing participation and membership, development pathways, securing and ad-
ministering national and international level competition.
As the sports’ volunteer member organisation, MTBNZ represents Clubs and interfaces with them to inform its
members”. A letter of support is included in appendix 2.

“The proposal to create a development plan for the Waikaia Forrest would be an excellent resource for Gore and
surrounding district as more regions are seeing the economic benefit encouraging the mountain bike community to
explore the area”.
