Year 5 Students Become Journalists for the Week!
This week, Year 5 had an exciting opportunity to step into the shoes of journalists, taking their
Literacy lessons to a whole new level. The classroom buzzed with energy as the children set out
to interview various members of staff, gathering insights and opinions on events happening in
and around the school. Armed with notebooks, pens, and a list of questions, the young report-
ers ventured into the offices and even the playground, ready to capture stories. Each group was
tasked with approaching members of staff to discuss school activities, such as the recent swim-
ming gala, upcoming cultural day celebrations, or even their Early Years Splash Day.
The interviews revealed a wide range of perspectives. Some teachers expressed excitement
about the children’s growing engagement with extracurricular activities, while others highlight-
ed the importance of fostering a sense of community. Back in the classroom, the students
transformed their interviews into articles, learning how to structure a story, create compelling
headlines, and weave in quotes from their sources. As they worked on their drafts, it was clear
they were not just practicing their writing skills but also learning to listen, empathize, and un-
derstand the world from different viewpoints.
By the end of the week, the Year 5 will complete their reports. The exercise not only enriched
their Literacy unit but also gave the children a taste of what it’s like to be storytellers, capturing
the pulse of the school through their own lens. Who knows? Among these Year Fives might
just be the next generation of renowned reporters and writers!
