READING CHALLENGE WINNERS
In Abuja Prep, the reading challenge is an incentive to reward students for reading a certain
number of books during a set time. Students are encouraged to visit the library, borrow a book
and read with understanding. Understanding is vital here as the Librarian, Ms. Frances, will take

the students through a series of questions to ensure that they read the book.
As a reward, the winners are announced during the whole school assembly, where they receive a
reading challenge certificate. The winners later join the school management for a special break-
fast organised on the rooftop. Students are served delicious meals in a buffet and enjoy their

time, especially with the Proprietress, Mrs. Ibrahim and the SLT.

Benefits of a Reading Challenge
1. Reading challenges introduce children to many genres, cultures, and perspectives. By ex-

ploring different worlds, historical periods, and characters through books, students gain a
broader understanding of the world around them. The exposure to diverse stories fosters
empathy and compassion in our students.

2. Reading challenges build a culture of reading in the school, increase book circulation, and
offer insight into the reading habits of students.

3. Reading challenges focus on encouraging children to move out of their reading “comfort

zones” to sample diverse authors or themes.

4. By encouraging students to read regularly, they can develop essential literacy skills, such
as vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking. The more they read, the more authentic

practice they get with decoding and reading fluency.

5. Reading challenges is a fantastic way to involve families in their child’s literacy develop-
ment. Parents can support reading habits at home by acting as role models, reading alongside

their children or participating in book discussions.
