Overdependence On
Digital Technology
Obehi Henshaw-Ativitie, Hamid Mohammed, Zayyan Tanimu Yakubu and
Renee-Azalea Okpara share their thoughts on our reliance on technology.
echnology has become an integral part of everyday life,
especially for students. Phones, laptops, social media,
T and AI tools allow us to communicate, learn, and stay
informed. However, too much reliance on digital technology
can be detrimental to students’ health, studies, and social lives.
Many students spend many hours a day on the internet, often
on their phones during study time or late at night. This can
lead to poor concentration, sleep deprivation, stress, and less
face-to-face communication. Sometimes, students tend to
depend too much on the internet or AI tools instead of thinking
independently and sharpening their problem-solving skills.
To better understand this issue, our group surveyed and
interviewed students and teachers. Our findings showed that
technology is useful, but many people feel it is important to
use it in moderation. Teachers also say that too much screen
time can be distracting for students, affecting their focus in the
classroom.
As a group, we believe the solution is not to avoid technology
altogether but to use it responsibly and in balance. Little
changes, such as reducing the time you spend in front of
a screen, not having your phone out while you study, and
spending more time with friends and family, can have a
huge impact.
Technology should be the helping hand of our lives, not its
oppressor. By raising awareness and encouraging balanced
digital habits, we can create a healthier and more productive
school community.
