One of our readers, Phillip Tordoff has contributed the enclosed picture, which was taken within a half mile of his home, nearly sixty years ago. This was a former Spenborough Urban District Council lamp situated on Hare Park Lane, Hightown, Liversedge, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The lamp had a dual purpose, as it also served as a bus stop.It%u2019s unusual design came about because double deck buses started using this road, which had a definite camber within the vicinity of the bus stop. This meant that whever the bus pulled up at the stop, there was a danger of damage to either the lamp, or the bus, or both. Such mountings were rare in Yorkshire, but I feel that Heath Robinson would have been proud of the effort!Philip TordoffThe Editors thank Philip Tordoff for his contribution and would like to make readers aware that his Book %u2018When the Streets were lit with Gas%u2019, in which the photograph can be found, can still be purchased online, through retailers such as amazon or specialist book websites such as abebooks.
