EDITOR’S LETTER
AFTER A COUPLE of false starts, it finally feels like
spring is here and with it brings a new edition of Gi
focusing on my favourite topic – innovation.
We are bringing you three amazing new projects
in this edition, all from different corners of the gas
industry.
First up, Stefan Romocki and Sébastien Le Fouest
are explaining how a new project from ProHeat
Systems is working to optimise gas temperature
control, with knock-on energy conservation benefits
for gas distribution networks. They are saving the networks a lot of carbon
emissions, so anyone working in preheating will want to pay attention to this.
IGEM’s youngest Chartered Engineer has spent years working on his own
invention, which has the potential to save dozens of lives every year. Having had
contact with the devastated families of victims of carbon monoxide poisoning,
Ben Kuchta decided to create an interlock that turns off a defective gas
appliance in response to a CO alarm. The simplest solutions are normally the
most elegant and effective and Ben’s work was the keystone of his successful
application to gain those CEng letters after his name. I’m sure we can expect
more great things from this young man in the future.
Water ingress in gas mains is a constant battle for gas networks. But what if
there were a device that could minimise the impact of this nuisance and help
site operatives to stay one step ahead of the problem? Enter Northern Gas
Networks’ PE smart syphon, an inventive solution to this costly problem.
In this edition, we’re also looking at Continuous Professional Development
(CPD). Not sure where to start? Join IGEM Professional Development Officer
Ross McCart as he guides you through the process using our CPD pipeline.
In addition to all this, we have so much IGEM News we’ve had to add extra
pages. Professor Dame Ann Dowling delivered this year’s Sir Denis Rooke
Memorial Lecture, we’re meeting the judges of the YPPC 2018 Grand Final,
we’ve launched a new programme of scholarships, grants and awards and a
host of revised standards have hit the shelves, the major changes to which
we’ve summarised here.
