I was born under its very shadow, and lived the greater part of my life in the garden which joins the caretakers house, and have worked all my life in its sights for Messrs. Braby & Co. whose factory is opposite.%u201d. These words were not unusual to the SMGC representative who could also claim to have been born under the shadow of a friendly holder that has some time since shared a similar fate to the one at Black Horse Bridge. It just goes to show that the demolition of a gasholder, which had become a local landmark, was a contentious issue even back in 1935.RTMany thanks to our readers comments regarding the 200th anniversary of the Public Gas Supply in Wales, it seems to have acted as a reminded to some readers. The Logo used in HGT107 was based on the original Official Seal commissioned by the Wales Gas Board, a version of which appeared in HGT104. The Wales Gas Board selected this Seal following an open competition, in which invited students and staff from the Art Department of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the Art Departments of the Technical Colleges of Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Wrexham. The winning entry was produced by Mr. J.C. Tarr, the head of the Art School at Cardiff Technical College. He Described his design as follows %u201cThe Seal takes the form of a circle of enclosing Roman capitals %u2018Bwrdd Nwy Cymru%u2019 balancing %u2018Wales Gas Board%u2019 within, on a concave background, in high relief is the head and neck of the Welsh Dragon, open mouthed, with arrow tongue point down, and conventional flames curling forward and up.%u201d One thing that appealed to the judges was the equal prominence of the given spelling of the Wales Gas Board in both English and Welsh. As the winner Mr Tarr won a prize of twenty Guineas. His seal went on to be replicated in colour on Wales Gas Board sites. The original carving featured in the Gas Times from 1949, unfortunately the quality of the picture, does not make it worth reprinting. Does anyone know what happened the Seal%u2019s of the Wales Gas Board, there were examples on a few Wales Gas Board sites and vehicles.RTORIGIN OF THE WALES GAS BOARD OFFICIAL SEALDetails of these three Gas Company seals will appear inHGT 112
