Obituary: Frank Johnston 55
Jonathan (aka Jono) Waters was born in Harare in 1969 where he attended
Blakiston and Prince Edward schools. After a year spent working in the UK and
travelling around the world, he went to Rhodes University where he read for a BA
in Economics and Journalism. His first job after university was at Business Day
in Johannesburg, where he was a mining reporter, followed by a stint at Sapa in
1993–94. After another two years of travel, he returned to London where he was
employed at AFX News for two-and-a-half years before being posted to Sydney,
Australia as Bureau Chief. He returned to Zimbabwe in September 2001 acting as
a consultant to the Zimbabwe Independent and lecturing in financial journalism.
In January 2003, he started Zfn, an email information service, which quickly grew
in popularity due to its balanced views within a highly polarised society. Jono is
the author of Harare – Urban Evolution, published in September 2015. New Zanj
Publishing House is a partnership between Jonathan Waters and Rhona Chapman
which has released a wide range of books and posters, notably The Central Africa
Stock Exchanges (CASE) Handbook covering the markets of Botswana, Malawi,
