car, we have several metrics to ensure that you have the
information to drive your car safely and within the rules e.g. fuel
gauge, oil gauge, temperature, etc. Imagine driving without a fuel
gauge, it means you wouldn't know when you run out of fuel! What
if this happens in the middle of the motorway, can you see how
dangerous that could be? So, in business, you see why it is
dangerous not to have the metrics to show you where your
business is positioned. Regular feedback will help you make the
right decision to stay on track and grow. Let me share this personal
story with you. I have always tried to maintain a healthy balance of
diet, exercise and sleep. However, when I have an important goal
I am chasing, then my sleep is the first casualty. I used to think
that I can make more of my day by sleeping less. I started keeping
records of my sleep vis a vis my productivity; the truth jumped out
at me from the record. Sleeping less destroys your productivity.
You are less likely to concentrate on anything for a period and then
the quality of what you do also diminishes over time. I wish Fitbit
would pay me for the next information I am going to share with you
because if you don’t have one, you will be getting one immediately.
If you don’t know what Fitbit is then google it. It is a device like a
wristwatch that measures your movement, sleep, heart rate,
calories, etc. The part that blew my mind was the sleep component
of the device. It measures ‘wake-sleep', ‘light sleep' and ‘deep
sleep'. To cut a long story short, the days that I record the 2hours
deep sleep or more are those days that my energy remains high
throughout the day. I usually get 4x done than ordinary days when
my deep sleep was less than one hour. So, I started noticing that
the days I get the deepest sleep are those days that I did my
exercise. The more surprising part also is that when I walk for 20
mins after dinner, I experience deeper sleep. I also noticed that
showering with warm water before sleep also helps enhance my
deep sleep those nights. Now I know what the factors contributing
to my deep sleep and I can combine all of them to get better sleep.
My conclusion shows that my productivity increases in line with an
increase in my deep sleep. Can you see how my business may be
positively impacted by a device that you may not associate with
business in any way shape or form? I have got a few expensive
watches, but I don’t use them anymore because I am addicted to
my Fitbit. This device tells me much more than time and by the
way, it increases my bottom-line because of the information I get
