30 different services to numerous sectors. I advised him to find a
niche and focus on high-value services which may double his
result in no time. I showed him that we have done this time and
again for other accountants. He was resistant to that strategy and
he said what he had been doing was working so why change it. I
told him that we have younger accountants with lesser experience
than him doing 3x his revenue using the same strategy; more
importantly, they are working less than 20 hours a week. He
remained stuck in his 12hours a day routine and still doing that
even as I write this book. So, beware of what you think you know
but that isn’t really true.
Albert Einstein said,
“The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same
level of thinking with which we created them."
What is possible for you depends on your thinking. Let me ask you
a question that I usually ask people at my seminars and please
say your answer in your mind before I reveal what delegates
answer is. How long does it take to learn lawn tennis to play
reasonably well? Delegates answers are usually between
3months to 6months. This question is a prelude to my introduction
of a genius who discovered something quite extra-ordinary about
our minds. Timothy Gallwey was a tennis coach extraordinaire
because he would pick someone on the street and teach her to
play tennis reasonably well in just 15 minutes. His results were so
mindboggling that a lot of Corporate America started chasing him
down to come and teach them his secret. The same methodology
that works so well in tennis coaching is transferable to business. I
was equally fascinated by his methodology that I got all his books
including those on tennis coaching and digested it to apply it to my
own business and those of my clients. I have distilled this method
to something you can systematically apply to enhance your own
performance and those of your team. One of the key insights
shared by Timothy about the mind is quite fascinating. He said the
hindrance to learning is negative self-talk; it doesn’t matter
whether you are an athlete, CEO, coach, consultant, etc. The full
potential of an individual is unleashed when you adopt the
methodology; it is a simple process to remove this chatter in the
head criticizing your moves even before you make them.
