Buzuki pochodzi ze starożytnej Gre- cji. W ciągu wieków instrument ewoluował, zanim osiągnął współcze-
sny kształt. Istnieje dowód na istnie- nie starożytnego instrumentu z trze- ma strunami nazywanego „pandura” („pandoura”), który kształtem bardzo przypomina buzuki. Na pandurze grali starożytni Grecy w IV wieku przed Chry- stusem. Struny tego instrumentu pocho- dziły z jelit zwierzęcych.
W Narodowym Muzeum Archeologicz- nym w Atenach znajduje się grecki mar- murowy relief muzy grającej na pan- durze „Mantineja Baseis” (330-320 rok przed Chrystusem).
Na skutek wojny w Azji Mniejszej (1919- 1922) i w wyniku wymiany ludności po- między Grecją a Turcją, rdzenni Grecy napłynęli do swojego kraju, a wraz
z nimi współczesny kształt buzuki. Ludzie grający wtedy na buzuki nazywani byli „rembetes”. Byli głównie uchodźcami z Kon- stantynopola i Smyrny, któ-
rzy osiedlili się w Pireusie. Byli uważani za ludzi wyję- tych spod prawa, ponieważ palili haszysz, pili i byli ko- bieciarzami. Na początku XX
Bouzouki comes from ancient Greece. Over the years the bouzouki has evolved into its modern form. There is
an evidence of an ancient instrument with three strings called „pandura” („pandoura”), which is very similar in shape to bouzouki. This instrument
was played by ancient Greeks during the 4th century BC. Pandura strings came from animal intestines.
There is a Greek marble relief, known as the Mantineia Base (dating from 330-320 BC) showing a muse playing a variant of
the pandoura, in the National Archeolog- ical Museum of Athens).
Following the war in Asia Minor (1919- 1922) and the subsequent exchange of populations between Greece and Tur-
key, the ethnic Greeks fled to Greece, so the bouzouki came. The people that played the bouzouki were known as Rembetes. The original Rem- betes were mostly refugees from Constantinople and Smirni, who settled in Pire- as. They were considered outlaws because of their smoking of Hashish, drink- ing and womanizing.
