Hey its our second edition of Radiodowntown.ca online.
Just want to take the time to thank everyone who gave us some amazing comments on the first issue, it sure was fun going through them.
I wanted to start here to explain the term Radio or Radio Staion or Internet Radio or Web Radio, whatever you call it.
Here is a description that most people seem to believe and accept including me. Have a quick read.....
Nowadays, the term ‘radio’ is used to describe any audio service that provides continuous realtime audio to the end listener. Strictly speaking ‘radio’ traditionally referred to an ‘over the air’ transmission method but in practical terms, whether you use traditional radio waves, streaming, or any other ‘transmission’ method, it is still all ‘radio’ as far as a listener is concerned!
The key thing that differentiates radio from other ‘on-demand’ audio services is the perception of a live, ‘in the moment’ service (even if it is actually automated). When you listen to a radio station, you are listening to something that is happening ‘now’ which is often what drives people to keep listening. It’s also a “shared” experience - you are listening to exactly the same content as all the other listeners, making you feel like you are part of a larger community with shared interests.
That does not mean that ‘on-demand’ should not factor into your plans. The ‘On-Demand’ generation expect to be able to consume entertainment on their own terms, so often a combination of live output and on-demand content is a winning formula!

So to the masses, the term radio means providing real time audio to the end listener, whether its over air waves, streaming or any other transmission method.
So is Radiodowntown.ca considered Radio? Yes absolutely. The bottom line is, if you enjoy listening to Radio in general, it comes in many sources and platforms these days.
A lot of conventional radio people and their station have not really caught up in the real world of Radio, so they tend to put down web radio, because it now provides competition to them.
I have been on several web sites who list what they refer to as radio stations. Both web radio and over the air like AM/FM are listed under that heading of Radio Stations. So its time for some of those dinosaurs in the business for years upon years to WAKE UP!
