Drug Dogs on Campus
In an effort to maintain a drug-free learning environment, Bowie State University Campus Police may, in
conjunction with local authorities, periodically utilize drug dogs in conducting sweeps for illicit drugs in
residence halls, and all parking lots. The Department of Public Safety will arrange supervision and coordinate
all canine searches with the assistance of Bowie State University’s Police Officers as well as other local law
enforcement agencies.
These sweeps will be performed by handlers and canines trained and certified in the detection of illegal
drugs/narcotics. Canines may be allowed to make sweeps through residence halls, parking lots, and may be
utilized inside of the buildings when it is deemed necessary. Searches may be conducted of vehicles, rooms, and
other areas once the canine alerts which may provide probable cause to believe that drugs are present in that
area. Upon discovery of suspected illegal drugs/narcotics, persons who are determined to be in violation of
Federal, State, and Local law and/or Bowie State University’s Student Code of Conduct, and the Student
Substance Abuse Policy, will face University disciplinary actions and possible arrest.
Sanctions
Students found responsible of alcohol and drug related offenses are subject to University disciplinary
action that provides for sanctions of varying severity including loss of campus housing, suspension and
expulsion. The campus police will be notified and also the parent(s)/legal guardian(s) of students under the
age of 21. Severe violations of the substance abuse policy, such as possession with intent to distribute,
purchasing for a minor, destruction of property, or assault and battery while under the influence of substance use
may subject the student to immediate suspension and/or arrest.
