3. Use Lasers If Possible
Some pediatric dentists provide an advanced erbium laser process that doesn’t
involve drills.
4. Distract Your Child
The reasons for the explanation of the procedure are simple: It provides the mind
some kind of distraction from the procedure. But different things work for different
children. If you know of a better method to help your child focus on something else
during the process of getting a cavity lled, use that instead.
5. Explain What is Going On
During the procedure you or the dentist can explain to the child what everything
is, what it is going to do, and then proceed to do it, walking the child through every
step of the process and making sure the child actively participates if possible by
registering your explanations.
6. Keep Them Calm During The Procedure
One way to help your child cope during the procedure is to keep them calm. This
means everything from a good night’s rest the night before to making sure they
don’t have anything to eat that will make them hyperactive. Discussing the
procedure beforehand helps but only if you can do so in a way that doesn’t instill
fear or anxiety.
These are just a few ideas to help you think about what you should do as a parent
when your child has a cavity and needs llings in their teeth.
